The Sovereign of the Seas was built in 1637 and was the first three-decker, 100-gun ship ever built. The United States Naval Academy Museum, located at Preble Hall within the Academy campus, features two floors of exhibits about the development and role of the U.S. Navy, spread across area of 12,000 square feet with four galleries. The museum's history dates back to 1845, when it was founded as the Naval School Lyceum. In 1849, President James K. Polk directed the Navy's collection of historic flags be sent to the new Naval School at Annapolis for care and display, establishing one of the museum's oldest collections. The Naval Academy Lyceum of the 19th and early 20th centuries was located in several places around the Naval Academy Yard, before the construction of Preble Hall in 1939. From 2007–2008, Preble Hall underwent a complete renovation to turn the building into a modern museum, which officially reopened in the summer of 2009. The United States Naval Academy, the second oldest of the five U.S. service academies, was established in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft to educate midshipmen for service in the officer corps of the United States Navy and United States Marine Core. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" enter the academy each summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate and commission each year. The 338-acre campus, known as the "Yard," is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn, and is home to many historic sites, buildings and monuments.

Annapolis - USNA: Brigade Chapel - Farragut Window The Farragut Window, to the right of the altar in Brigade Chapel, shows Admiral David Farragut, in the rigging of the screw sloop-of-war USS Hartford, which he commanded to victory in the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864 below the mezzanine, and an angel guiding Farragut to victory above the mezzanine. The Farragut Window was conceived of by the class of 1890-1892 and presented in 1914 to honor the man who was appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy at the age of nine and was the first admiral in the U.S. Navy. The window was designed by Frederick Wilson and fabricated by the Gorham Company. The United States Naval Academy Chapel, or the Brigade of Midshipmen Chapel, was constructed between 1904 and 1908 in the Beaux Arts style by Ernest Flagg. The original design featured a Greek cross plan, with four equal transepts and a capacity of 1,200. In 1938, renovations under architect Paul Philippe Cret, added a nave, which changed the shape to a Latin cross, and raised seating capacity to 2,500. The chapel's copper dome, a focal point of not only the building and campus, but the city, with a cupola raising 193 feet above the main altar. On January 26, 1913, the remains of John Paul Jones' were interred in the crypt the chapel inside a sarcophagus made of 21 short tons of black and white Italian marble with bronze fittings. Scotland-born John Paul Jones has long been heralded as the first Navy American War Hero, often called the "Father of the American Navy." When he died in 1792 at the age of 45, Jones was originally laid to rest in an unmarked grave in France. They were later identified exhumed and transferred back to the United States aboard the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) for a proper interment under the leadership of Ambassador General Horace Porter. Annapolis - USNA: Navy Bill Navy Bill, a sculpture of the United States Naval Academy's mascot, Bill the Goat, a billy goat, located inside Gate 1 oof the Academy, was designed by Clemente Spampinato in 1956 and presented by the Class of 1915 on May 15, 1957. The Naval Academy has had a goat as its mascot since 1890 when, according to legend, on their march from the ferry station at Highland Falls up the steep hill to West Point to play the first Army-Navy football game, the Naval Cadets (as they were then known) saw a goat outside the noncoms' houses at West Point and promptly commandeered "Billy" for their mascot. Since that time the goat has remained as the recognized mascot of the U.S. Naval Academy. Annapolis: Maryland State House - Washington Resigning His Commission Washington Resigning His Commission, hanging in the Grand Staircase at the Maryland State House, was painted by Edwin White in 1858. This monumental painting depicts the scene in the Old Senate Chamber on December 23, 1783, when General George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the victorious Continental Army. White took some liberties in depicting those present at the ceremony, including Martha Washington and her niece who were actually at the Washington home in Mount Vernon. The Maryland State House, located inside State Circle, is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, and houses the Maryland General Assembly, plus the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The current two-story brick building, the third statehouse on the site, was constructed from 1772 to 1797 to the Georgian style design of Joseph Horatio Anderson and features the largest wooden dome in the United States constructed without nails. An black and gold Italian marble annex was constructed between 1902 and 1906, replacing an earlier annex, under the supervision of Baltimore architects Baldwin & Pennington. From November 1783 to August 1784, Annapolis was the capital of the United States, and the Congress of Confederation, also known as the Continental Congress, met in the Maryland State House. Annapolis: St. John's College - Woodward Hall The Barr-Buchanan Center at St. John's College, formerly known as Woodward Hall, was erected in 1899 and renovated in 1968. Originally named for Henry Williams Woodward, father of a board member and college benefactor, it served as the college library. Today is is hime to Graduate Institute offices and classrooms, including the Hartle Room and King William Room. St. John's College in Annapolis, with its origins tracing back to King William's School founded in 1696, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States. Chartered in 1784, St. John's College absorbed King William's School when it opened in 1785. The small private liberal arts college, with a sister campus in Santa Fe, is known for its distinctive Great Books curriculum adopted in 1937.
