NATIONAL AQUARIUM-BALTIMORE

BALTIMORE, MD

Baltimore - Fort McHenry: Barracks Barracks No. 1 was used to house enlisted men. One room was for non-commissioned officers (corporals and sergeants), perhaps a second for musicians and artificers (skilled military craftsmen). The remaining room was for privates. At the time of the War of 1812 the building was one story, with a second story added in the 1830s.

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, a pentagonal bastion fortification located on Locust Point, is best known for its role in the War of 1812, where it withstood 25 hours of bombardment by the British Navy, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." The fort was later used as a military prison during the Civil War and as a hospital in World War I, and was designated a national park in 1925 and a National Monument and Historic Shrine in 1939, becoming the only dual-designated national monument and historic shrine in the United States.
