The Western Somerset Historical Society is a non-profit organization located in North New Portland, Maine. Founded in 1981, it is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and culture of the area. The Society works to collect, preserve, and share the stories of the community and its people through a variety of programs, activities, and services.
The Society operates out of two locations. The first is the Society’s main office, located in the North New Portland town hall. The second is the Society’s museum, located in the historic former high school building in East Wilton. The museum features a variety of exhibits, including early maps and photographs of the area, artifacts from the area’s past, and a collection of historical books and documents.
The Society also holds a number of events throughout the year, including lectures, workshops, and field trips to local sites of historical interest. They also host an annual Heritage Festival, which includes a parade, music, food, and activities for the whole family. The Society also publishes a newsletter and maintains a website, both of which provide up-to-date information about the Society’s programs and activities.
