Spirits Alive Portland is a community-based, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to protecting and preserving Portland, Maine’s historic cemeteries. Founded in 1991, the organization works to raise public awareness, create educational programs and promote community involvement in the preservation of these irreplaceable monuments.

The organization has three main focuses: preservation, education, and community involvement. To preserve Portland’s cemeteries, Spirits Alive works to rehabilitate and restore the physical features of the cemeteries, such as headstones and monuments, as well as to improve the overall condition of the grounds. Through education and programming, Spirits Alive works to increase public awareness and understanding of the historic cemeteries and their importance in the history of the city. The organization also works to engage the community in their preservation and education efforts by hosting events like lectures, workshops, and tours.

Spirits Alive is committed to protecting Portland’s rich and diverse history and to serving as a resource for visitors and residents alike. The organization works to ensure that these historic cemeteries remain a vibrant part of the community for years to come.
