Water And Commercial Streets A nice mural between Water and Commercial Streets in Augusta, Maine.

Capital City Cycles A relatively new business on Augusta's Water Street. What caught my eye was what was hanging on the walls. It looks like it also may be a gallery in addition to being a bicycle shop. It was not open so I could not go in. I like the reflections here. It was getting toward dusk. The reflections of the sky appear to be on the ceiling. When I tried using the select sky in Lightroom it did select the correct area.

Cushnoc Brew Pub and Restaurant This is the back side of this establishment and faces the Kennebec River in Augusta, Maine.

Commercial Street Pano This is an unintended HSS. I merged three photos taken along Commercial Street in Augusta, ME. I did not take the three photos from the same point but rather from three different points. The merging of the buildings worked well. However the cars are a different story. HSS. One reason the cars are cut off at the bottom is that I was using the front edge of the sidewalk as a guide for the bottom edge of each photo. Also note the wire that no longer connects.

Huiskamer Coffee House Mural This wonderful mural is on the rear side of what was a coffee house. Sadly, that business had to close during the pandemic and it is now called Wrapped Up Coffee House. Below is a description of the business on a local radio station website written not to long before it closed.

Have you visited downtown Augusta lately? Did you notice anything new happening on Commercial Street? Well, if you missed it there is a gorgeous new mural on the side of Huiskamer Coffee House.

The Augusta Downtown Alliance teamed up with mural sponsor Smart Eye Care, and nationally known mural artist Kris Markovich, to bring a little light and love to the city of Augusta.

The Augusta Downtown Alliance really wanted to bring big city type vibes to our quaint little city here on the banks of the Kennebec river. I'm a local girl so it never dawned on me that we don't have many traditional &quot;big city&quot; feel type murals, but if you think about it we really don't. Sure, there are a few in Portland, but you really have to make the trip to Boston or New York to see artwork like this... Until now.

This mural is so much more then just a mural. Every time you look at it there is something new and inspiring to see. From simple saying like &quot;may we all live to see another day&quot; to &quot;eyes on the future&quot;. If you look long enough you'll continue to find things such as, numbers, the zip code that belongs to Augusta, and the cutest door that says &quot;knock-knock&quot; and the word community.

Storage Shed This is a wall of an old storage shed in Gardiner, Maine. I am not sure what it might have been used for or if it is still in use. It wall is perhaps 20 feet tall and all of the windows are near the top of it. I added a grunge overlay and some color in an effort to make the photo more interesting.

It houses Harvey's Hardware that has been around for about 100 years. The main entrance it at the right end facing Maine Street.

Behind The Scenes In the same row of buildings as yesterdays in Gardiner, Maine. The other side faces Water Street that is about one level higher. A set of stairs under the arch leads up to the street. There is a lot going on here with several fire escapes, fans and AC units, and electric meters. Also a deck that acts as a car port.

Augusta, Maine Mural In Augusta, Maine this mural has been painted on a retaining wall. Above between the fence and the buildings lies Water Street. It is a center of night life in this small city and is the state capitol. At this level is Front Street and behind me runs the Kennebec River. Below is an edited newspaper article about the creation of this mural.

Artist Clint Pettengill wants community members to come together to give color and life to a large mural he created to show how the community came together, in the past, to create the Augusta we know today.
So on Saturday Pettengill, a Winthrop artist who studied at the University of Maine at Augusta, will hand over his paint brushes to the people of the community, including children and adults who might have never completed a work of art, so they can finish the work he designed.
The piece, which has a theme of “Be a bridge from what is, to what will be,” features icons from Augusta’s past, including Old Fort Western and the Colonial Theatre, and nods to logging and other industries that helped create Augusta’s once-vibrant downtown, next to a flowing Kennebec River. Pettengill said he wanted it to depict Augusta’s early history and how the downtown grew out of early industries.
“We’re trying to make it as accessible as possible, so everybody can feel part of a bigger whole,” Pettengill said. “It’s what the project is all about — a bunch of people throughout time building a great city together.” The mural will cover a large city-owned retaining wall.
The mural incorporates a set of stairs already along the wall, which provide pedestrian access between Water and Front streets. People painted on the wall behind the stairs are in clothing from different time periods, with their garb becoming more modern the higher up the stairs each person is located.
