READFIELD UNION MEETING HOUSE

READFIELD, ME

Maine State House, State Street and Capitol Street, Augusta, ME Built in 1829-1832, this Classical Revival-style building was originally designed by Charles Bullfinch as a smaller structure, and was heavily renovated in 1890-1891 and 1909-1910, with the latter being carried out under the direction of G. Henri Desmond, removing most of the original structure and adding the present dome and wings. The building’s original section forms the nucleus of the present structure, with additions to the east, west, north, and atop the roof, due to the increasing needs for space by various state government agencies and departments, as well as the growing needs of the legislators. The building’s exterior is clad in white granite, with arched bays on the third floor, doric pilasters, a front portico with a rusticated base and doric colonnade below a pediment on the second floor, with this central section of the facade being flanked by two wings, housing the state house and senate chambers, which feature low domes on their roofs. Atop the center of the building’s main wing is a metal dome atop a cylindrical drum with a doric colonnade, a lantern and golden statue atop the dome, and a balustrade wrapping around the top of the colonnade at the drum. The rear of the building features a gabled roof, with largely rectilinear window bays, a semi-circular rear bay window, and arched window bays at the exterior of the state library. Inside, the details are rather restrained, with stone floors, wooden trim, a paneled ceiling in the rotunda, pilasters, and skylights being the most notable features. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and is a contributing structure in the Capitol Complex Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Today, the building remains the seat of the state government of Maine.
