The Jewett Eastman Memorial Committee (JEMC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of South Berwick, Maine. The Committee was created in 1990 and is named after the town's founder, Jewett Eastman. The Committee's mission is to promote and preserve the historical significance of the town and its people.
The JEMC works to save and protect the town’s historic structures, sites and artifacts. The Committee also sponsors educational programs, lectures and other events to educate the public about the town's history.
The JEMC is involved in a variety of preservation efforts. The Committee has restored many of the town's historic buildings, including the Jewett Eastman House, the Jewett Store, and the Jewett Tavern. The Committee has also preserved the Town Hall, the Opera House and the First Parish Church.
The Committee also works to keep the town's natural resources intact. The JEMC has identified several areas of the town that are important for preserving the town's natural environment and wildlife. The Committee has worked to protect the town's water resources and has also been involved in efforts to create trails and green spaces in town.
The JEMC is also involved in other activities to promote the town's history. The Committee sponsors a yearly symposium and hosts a series of lectures and workshops, as well as an annual Jewett Eastman Memorial Day.
