The Shaker Society in New Gloucester, Maine, was a religious community founded in 1794 by the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as the Shakers. The community was established on a 1,800-acre farm and was home to approximately 200 members at its peak.

The Shakers believed in communal living, celibacy, and strict gender roles. They were known for their simple lifestyle, hard work, and innovative farming techniques. They also had a reputation for their craftsmanship, particularly in furniture-making, and their music.

The Shaker Society in New Gloucester was divided into several "families," each with its own leader and specific duties. The community was entirely self-sufficient, with members growing their own food, making their own clothes, and producing their own tools and furniture.

The Shaker Society in New Gloucester thrived for many years, but by the early 20th century, the community began to decline. The last member of the New Gloucester Shakers died in 1952, and the community's buildings and land were eventually sold to private owners.

Today, the Shaker Society in New Gloucester is remembered for its unique culture and contributions to farming, craftsmanship, and music. Some of the community's buildings have been preserved as historic sites, and there is a museum dedicated to the Shaker legacy in the area.
