A few old-growth forests remain "I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree"
–excerpt from the poem Trees by New Jersey poet Joyce Kilmer

It is quite difficult to find virgin or old-growth forests that have never been logged in Kentucky. After all, hardwood lumber fetched good prices on the market, and farm fields produced food for settlers.

Kentucky has seven small public nature reserves of old-growth forests. I so far have visited four of these, characterized by their massive hardwood trees. Lovely hikes. These are more like woods than large forests. These small tracts were often intentionally preserved by their previous owners, such as this small old-growth woodland nature preserve in Northern Kentucky between a skate shoot and a housing tract.
