Hudspeth Well Replica - Franklin, KY According to the plaque on the front: Replica built in 1968 by the Franklin-Simpson Young Historians and Robert Taylor. Back when new counties would look to establish a county seat, landowners might lobby to recruit their property to become the courthouse as the surrounding land would become more valuable. A water source would make land a better place for a county seat. William Hudspeth dug a well on his land in hopes of finding water, but it didn't work. He secretly brought in water to make it appear it was an active well. This trickery worked and his land was chosen for the courthouse. But the water brought in primed the land for the well to really work, and it was used for many years.

Centre House Doorway Like their Quaker sources, the Shakers were pacifists. Unlike the other Shaker settlements however, South Union was hard hit during the American Civil War. Initially in a part of Kentucky occupied by Confederate troops, they were treated with disdain as cowards and suspicion for abolitionist thought. In the end the Shakers were left alone, but the constant passage of first Confederate and then Union troops, all requesting food and supplies, made life miserable for the inhabitants of South Union. After writing to President Abraham Lincoln, Shakers were specifically exempted from military service, becoming the first conscientious objectors in United States history.
