Nicodemus National Historic Site Ranger on Wheels

The town of Nicodemus, Kansas was founded in 1877 by black settlers fleeing the Jim Crow Laws of the Deep South. The town prospered for awhile, however when the railroad bypassed the town it began a long decline. Today less than 100 people live in Nicodemus. The National Park Service, together with the residents of Nicodemus, preserve five historic buildings in the historic town.

The Nicodemus Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the African American community in Nicodemus, Kansas. Founded in 1981, the organization has worked to collect, preserve, and share the stories of the people who settled in this unique town.

Nicodemus is the only remaining western town established by African Americans after the Civil War. In 1877, a group of former slaves from Kentucky created the town and established it as a refuge for African Americans looking for a place to start over.

The Nicodemus Historical Society is committed to preserving the legacy of the town's founders, as well as its long history of activism, entrepreneurship, and self-determination. Their mission is to create an archive of African American history, culture, and experiences in Nicodemus, and to provide educational opportunities for the community.

The organization hosts several events throughout the year, such as the Annual Homecoming Reunion, Summer Youth Day Camp, and the African American History Symposium. Additionally, they offer a variety of educational programs and activities, such as lectures, films, and walking tours of the town.

The Nicodemus Historical Society is a valuable resource for the community and a great way to learn more about the history and culture of African Americans in Nicodemus.
