IMG_4800a I don't think this truck is a part of the &quot;Cars&quot; franchise. It sits in front of Jordan Disposal Service, just down Front St. from Luigi's and Cars on the Route. I admire this company's community spirit!

IMG_4803a Other characters: &quot;Luigi&quot; is a 1959 Fiat 500 who owns a tire shop called Luigi's Casa Della Tires. In Galena Luigi can be found in his &quot;Pit Stop&quot;.

IMG_4808a Other characters: &quot;Sheriff&quot; (voiced by Michael Wallis who signed this replica) is a 1949 Mercury Eight police car. Sheriff is painted in classic black and white with a single red light dome, two sirens, and curb feelers. Sheriff was the first resident of Radiator Springs to appear in the original film and the first to meet Lightning McQueen

IMG_4809a Other characters: &quot;Lightning McQueen&quot; is not modeled on a specific type of vehicle. Lightning owns a racing academy with Doc Hudson called the &quot;Doc Hudson Racing Academy&quot; where he trains rookie racers in the act of speed and good sportsmanship. During his career, Lightning has won several Piston Cup championships.

IMG_4814a In the Disney/Pixar film, &quot;Cars&quot; &quot;Mater&quot; is a rusty tow truck resembling a 1957 Chevrolet Task Force. He is Lightning's best friend and Holley Shiftwell's boyfriend.

IMG_4812a The truck had been parked for years next to an abandoned, circa-1933 gas station at Old Route 66 and Main Street in Galena. Galena businessman Larry Courtney purchased the building, sans truck, to convert it into a gift shop and snack bar.

Now “Mater” has become a part of the gas station’s attractions.

IMG_4817a A dedication to the late Pixar animator Joe Ranft in the book “The Art of Cars” describes what happened during the research tour:

&quot;In Galena, Kansas, we found a lonely old tow truck that most folks would pass by without a second glance. Our Head of Story Joe Ranft, however, saw beyond the rust and broken-down parts — he saw the inspiration for the character Mater. They soon became kindred spirits. Joe gave Mater his warmth, his sense of fun, his humble and generous spirit, and his capacity to see — and bring out — the best in others.&quot;

IMG_4816a When the Pixar crew first traveled down Route 66, the studio’s “story guru,” Joe Ranft, became inspired by a rusty old pickup truck he saw in a junkyard near Galena, Kan. That truck provided much of the template to the equally rusty and rickety Mater.
Galena's “Mater” is a 1951 International boom truck, not a tow truck. The extra-long boom was used to lift equipment out of the lead-mine shafts that dot the region. Wallis confirmed it is the same truck that Ranft saw in 2001.

IMG_4815a Other characters: &quot;Red&quot; is a red 1950s Torchy Truck Company fire truck appearing in Cars, Cars 2, and Cars 3. He is Radiator Springs' only fire truck. He's also the town's most sensitive resident.
