Dan Smith Dead.

Daniel Smith, who had been ill for the past two months, passed away at one o’clock this morning, at his home south of Vermillion, aged 67 years, 7 months and 19 days. Mr. Smith was born at West Lebanon, Penn., on Feb. 19, 1846. He came to Kansas in 1865, locating in this locality, where he lived ever since, except for two years he spent in California.
He was a veteran of the Civil war, enlisting in Co. “D”, 2nd Battalion of the Penn. Volunteers, where he served for six months, later re-enlisting in Co. “D”, 206 Penn. Volunteers, serving until the close of the war. He was a member of Henderson Post G. A. R. of this city, was always faithful in attendance at the Post meetings and will be most sadly missed by his old comrades.
While Mr. Smith’s death was not unexpected, still he had been ill so many times and recovered that his friends still had hopes that he would pull through this sickness, and be with them again. Everything that family and friends could do was done for him, and he always expressed great appreciation of any attention.
Besides the wife, two daughters, Mrs. Ollie Farrant and Mrs. Anna Myrtle Carver of this locality survive him; and also four brothers, R. W. Smith of Bigelow, James Smith of Topeka, W. H. and Geo. T. Smith of Marysville, and many other relatives, and hosts of old friends and neighbors.
The funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church at 2 o’clock, Thursday afternoon, in charge of Henderson Post, and the interment will be in the Willow Hill cemetery.

Daniel Smith, civil war veteran and early settler in Marshall county, died at his home at Frankfort, Kansas, Wednesday, October 8, 1913, aged 67 years, 7 months and 19 days.
He was born at West Lebanon, Indiana county, Penn., February 19, 1846. When three years old moved to Eldersridge in the same county, where his early life was spent on his father's farm..
He was not old enough to be accepted as a soldier in the calls that were made for men in 1861 and 1862. In the sore need of the government in 1863, he was permitted to enter the service and was enrolled, June 19, 1863, in Capt. John Coleman's Co. D, 2nd Batt. six-months Penn. Volunteers, in which he served the full term and was discharged at Pittsburg, Pa., January 21, 1864. Not being satisfied with so short a service, he enlisted again Aug. 22nd, 1864, in Capt. William C. Gordon's Co. D, 206 Reg. Penn. Volunteers for a term of one year during the war. In this regiment he served until June 26, 1865, when he was discharged at Richmond, Va., by reason of the close of the war. He was not wounded in battle, but the hard service in the Army of the Potomac, during that last year of the war left him in broken health from which he never recovered.
In December, 1865, he came to Kansas, and located on the Vermillion in this county and has resided here ever since except two years 1875-1876, at Fresno, Calif.
He was married in 1868 to Mary Ann Osborne. His wife and two daughters, Mrs. Olive Farrant of Barrett, Kansas, and Mrs. Myrtilla Carver of Winifred, Kansas, survive him. One daughter, Mrs. Margaret Lucas, and one baby girl are dead.
The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Frankfort at 2 o'clock Thursday Henderson Post No. 53 escorted the body from the home to the church. The Relief Corps assisted the Post. The Corps colors were used. Rev. A. R. Bickenbach conducted the service and preached the sermon. Service at the cemetery by Henderson Post. Four brothers, James, Robert W., Wm. H., Geo. T., and two nephews, James Smith of Frankfort and Robert S. Smith of Topeka, were the pall bearers. The burial was in Willow Hill cemetery.
He was a patriotic boy. He was a brave young soldier and endured service so hard that his health was permanently broken. His long residence in Marshall county made him widely known and he had many friends. He was a patriotic citizen. He was a good neighbor. His neighbors were good to him and he was good to them.
Good bye Dan. You were a good brother.
