The Museum of Black Arkansans (EMOBA) in Little Rock, Arkansas is the first museum in the state dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history, culture and achievements of African Americans in Arkansas. Founded in 2017, EMOBA is located in the historic Dunbar School, which was built in 1917 to educate African American children during the era of Jim Crow segregation.
Visitors to EMOBA can explore various exhibits that tell the stories of Arkansans of African descent. The museum’s permanent collection includes photographs, documents and artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries that illustrate the struggle and triumphs of African Americans in Arkansas. EMOBA also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, films and other activities throughout the year.
In addition to its exhibitions, EMOBA also serves as a research center and community hub. Visitors to the museum can access books, documents, and other archival materials collected by the museum staff. The museum also offers educational and outreach programs, including panel discussions, workshops, and field trips.
With its mission to preserve, promote and celebrate the history of African Americans in Arkansas, the Museum of Black Arkansans is an important resource for all Arkansans. EMOBA is open to the public, and admission is free.
