The Greene County Historical Society in Jefferson, IA is dedicated to preserving the history of Greene County and its citizens. Founded in 1974, the Society is based in the historic Greene County Courthouse. The Society collects, preserves, and exhibits artifacts, documents, and photographs that tell the story of Greene County.

The Society’s collections include the archives of local newspapers, including the Jefferson Bee, the Greene County Republican and the Jefferson Herald, as well as a variety of books, maps, photographs and other items of local interest.

The Society also operates several museums, including the Greene County Historical Museum, the Greene County Museum of Agriculture, and the Greene County Museum of Natural History. Each museum is filled with artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the area’s history.

The Greene County Historical Society also hosts a variety of educational and social programs, including lectures, walking tours, and workshops. The Society also publishes a variety of materials relating to the history of Greene County, including books and pamphlets about local history.

The Greene County Historical Society is an important part of the community and is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Greene County and its citizens.
