Kanawha Iowa Mainstreet looking north from the automotive district This picture from the south end of Main Street looking north was probably taken in the late 1920s. The gas station on the right still shows its original name, Go Gas. It became the Hawkeye Oil Company in 1923, the Diamond Service Company by 1930 and later the DX where I spent too much time working on cars. The Norway Telephone Co. was across the street.

The Garage on the left with the Kelly Tire sign sold Buicks, Dodges, Chevys, Pontiacs and Sampson Trucks over the years. The small wood building to the north has a Shoe Repair sign and was possibly operated by Reinhard Dirksen at the time the picture was taken. The taller building next to the shop was the Hotel..

Kanawha, Iowa Birdseye View looking south pre-1913 This picture appears to have been taken from the roof of the old school. It was taken before the creamery was built in 1913. Some of the buildings were moved into town from other locations after the railroad came through in 1899. Main Street looking south is on the right and the lift equipment for loading sugar beets on train cars is at the far left. It must have been the day to wash whites that are hanging on the clothes line stretching to the outhouse near the center of the picture.

Klemme Iowa - Bank of Klemme-State Savings Bank No PM The Bank of Klemme was built in 1902 and its name was changed to the State Savings Bank of Klemme in 1904. It was the first brick building built for a business in Klemme and the princely sum of $8,000 covered its construction and furnishings. The Klemme Times newspaper office, with the sign, was in the rear building, along with the Koerner Telephone Company. This postcard was not used or dated but it was probably printed before 1920.

Klemme, Iowa South Side Main Street PM 1912-07-15 Ell's cafe must have had the biggest marketing budget on this side of Main Street in 1912. Their sign shows up well. This scene is shown on page 99 of the Klemme Iowa 1889-1989 centennial book and it lists the businesses looking east from 1st and Main Street from right to left as: Gruetzmacher Brothers General Store, 2 fronts: John Waterman General Store, 2 fronts: Busch Meat Market, 2 fronts; vacant lot; Kirkwood Resturant; Ell Brothers Resturant; vacant lot, Pabst Drug Store, 2nd Street, Klemme Hotel.
