The Wabash County Astronomical Society, based in North Manchester, Indiana, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting astronomy education and public outreach in the region. Founded in 1981, the group has an active membership of over 50 individuals, ranging from amateur astronomers to professional astronomers, educators, and students. The Society's mission is to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the sky, and to provide resources and services to encourage the educational and recreational use of astronomy.
The Society hosts regular public events, such as star parties, educational lectures and demonstrations, and telescope workshops. During these events, members share their knowledge and enthusiasm for astronomy with all attendees. The Society also maintains an observatory in North Manchester, and offers access to members and the public. The observatory houses three telescopes, including a 14-inch Newtonian reflector and a 16-inch Dobsonian reflector.
In addition, the Society sponsors regular field trips to different locations around the county, giving members the opportunity to observe the night sky in a variety of settings. The Society also supports the annual Indiana Star Party, a popular gathering of amateur astronomers from all over the United States.
The Wabash County Astronomical Society is an active and vibrant organization, committed to promoting astronomy and education in the local community. By providing access to resources and equipment, offering educational lectures and demonstrations, and organizing regular field trips and star parties, the Society continues to foster a greater appreciation for the beauty of the night sky.
