(South Asian, Indian) Material: Ink, opaque watercolor, and gold on paper, mounted on an album page Venue: Speed Art Museum, University of Louisville on loan courtesy of The San Diego Museum of Art --- With my photographer's eyes, this rather risqué image from India was about leading lines, which I thought was a Western art thing. It apparently is not. Eyes being eyes, no matter where, leading lines are evident here in this classic Indian art. The beguiling complementary colors and the fine detail in the brush strokes are striking. The art museum actually gave me a magnifying glass to better see those fine strokes. The plaque next to the painting explained the art as what I relate to as sort of a Song of Solomon kind of thing– those poems of sexual desire in the Bible, e.g. "your breasts are like twin fawns of a gazelle...blow on my garden" [Song of Solomon 4: 5 & 16 to name just a few], which are explained away as really about man's relationship with God. The plaque states: "This portrait of a beautiful woman sitting at a window with a bird delicately perched on her fingers may allude to the metaphor of the <i>gul u bulbul</i>, or rose and nightingale, stemming from classical Persian literature and adopted by Sufi mystics to reflect the ultimate bond of love with God. Within the conventions of Persianate and Indian mystical poetry, the soul's inexplicable longing for union with God is talked about in the language of earthly love--passionate and illicit..."

Minuteman with musket Title: Minuteman Artist: James Muir Material: bronze over quarried Kentucky limestone Venue: In front of the Sons of the American Revolution national headquarters, Main Street, Louisville, Kentucky (Although in 1775 minutemen were specifically members of New England's militia companies—e.g. Paul Revere—who were trained in weaponry, tactics, and military strategies to fight in the Revolutionary War at a minute's notice against the British, this generic minuteman statue looks like a gentle Kentucky nod to frontier and Revolutionary War hero Daniel Boone, who was not a minuteman but was a patriot. I see Boone hiking under tall Kentucky hardwood trees and a rising sun.😉 Handsome statue.)

Not Saint Nicholas but Saint Jerome Artist: Zanetto Bugatto (Italian, active 1458 - 1476) Title: 1 of 5 panels—Saint John the Baptist; Saint Christopher; Saint Jerome; Saint Lawrence; and Saint Ambrose (1470 - 1475) Material: Oil on panel Venue: Speed Art Museum, University of Louisville --- This is a 15th-century artist's depiction of Saint Jerome, whose name is engraved in his halo. I must confess that Saint Jerome looks much like Santa Claus, that is to say, Saint Nicholas. <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saint-Nicholas" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Nicholas</a> was probably a bishop in Asia Minor during the Roman Empire of the 4th Century A.D. However, there have been no collaborating documents that record St. Nicholas' life, although his life was celebrated in festivals and traditions for centuries in both the Eastern and Western churches and a shrine to Nicholas has been in his alleged hometown since the 6th Century. Both men, Saint Nicholas and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saint-Jerome" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Saint Jerome</a>, are from roughly the same period, wearing similar church outfits. In an illiterate world, Jerome is READING (signifying he was part of an educated elite) a BOOK. He is not reading through a papyrus scroll but he is privileged to have access to the quantum computer of his day, the beginnings of double-sided parchment pages of the back-binding codex, where one can easily flip through a voluminous collection of handwritten books such as the Bible to a specific page to quickly pinpoint the script.
