Circling Back Around NS D46s run to Frankfort ended up being rather uneventful, with little opportunities to catch the train. While we did get to see the fabled 'Christmas tree' signal that guards Frankforts diamond, D46 didn't actually pass the signal. So, a lot of waiting for not very much.

Still, having run around to the other side of a short cut of cars, our two Dash 9s picked up a friend in Frankfort in the form of a former N&amp;W SD40-2 and have returned to Dayton. If nothing else then, we did get to spot the other side of the NKP R2s, which is hard to complain about.

Round Two for R2s One of the hardest questions to answer is usually &quot;when does run on this line?&quot; It's usually shortlines that demand the answer, but less-used Class 1 lines certainly beg the question often enough, too. One such example is the Frankfort branch on NS.

We knew there was at least some traffic that way, but one day we just said, to hell with it, and early in the morning we set out towards Lafayette. We knew there were some signals of interest out there, but we didn't know the details and so we wanted to confirm what remained wherever we could.

At Dayton, NS D46 was our train of the day. The two big GEs led a fair sized manifest out of the South Yard, passing by the US&amp;S R2s erected by the Nickel Plate Road. The details on these signals - unique, longer hoods as well as an interesting paint choice - made them prime targets. Not to mention, they were some rare examples of R2s. Outside of the Big Sandy, these are some very rare signals, so to be able to see them was a very welcome sight.
