The Portage Community Historical Society Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Portage, Indiana. Established in 1982, the society is committed to preserving the memories of the area, its people and the various events that have shaped the Portage community. The society collects and preserves artifacts, documents, photographs and oral histories to serve as a living record of the area’s past.
The Portage Community Historical Society operates two museums located in Portage. The main museum is housed in the historic 1856 Gillett House, which was once the residence of local businessman Isaac Gillett. The museum features a range of displays, including artifacts from the area’s early settlers, local Native American artifacts and a variety of artifacts from different periods of the area’s history. The museum also houses a research library and a collection of photographs.
The society also operates the Portage Railroad Museum. This museum is dedicated to the history of the railroad industry in Portage, featuring a variety of artifacts and displays related to the area’s railroads. Visitors can also explore a collection of vintage railroad equipment, including locomotives, boxcars and cabooses.
The Portage Community Historical Society also hosts a range of educational programs, including lectures, workshops and field trips. The society also offers research assistance, genealogy services and special events. The society is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Portage and its people.
