Impending Doom There's always been junk on the ground around the grain elevator at Metcalf, IL. Seems like every time I visit I'm left wondering if that's a sign of its impending demolition or what. My last venture down to shoot DREI's 101, I wasn't sure how to shoot Metcalf. It's an awkward area, but the metal junk around the elevator caught my eye and so I shot the then-new GP59 and its 'SD45' cohorts. I would learn just a few weeks later that the feeling that nagged me every time was there for a reason, and that the Metcalf elevator had been demolished. Though it wasn't a particularly pretty one, it is always a shame to lose more elevators. Suffice to say, I wish I had shot the elevator itself here, but alas. Maybe there's some lesson to be learned here... Like if you see a pile of junk in front of a grain elevator, go shoot the elevator. Yeah, that seems like a good lesson to me.

Ernie Pyle State Historic Site in Dana, Indiana is dedicated to the memory of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent, Ernie Pyle. The site consists of the Ernie Pyle House, a single-story, frame bungalow where Pyle was born, and a small museum.

The Ernie Pyle House is a typical, rural Indiana home of the early 1900s. It features period furnishings, including items that belonged to Pyle. The museum is devoted to the life and career of Ernie Pyle, including personal artifacts, photographs, and newspaper articles.

Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of the Ernie Pyle Memorial Garden, located on the grounds of the historic site. The garden features native Indiana plants, trees, and shrubs, as well as a granite wall inscribed with quotes from Pyle's writing.

Spinning 'Round My last chase of the DREI 101 was a little different than normal, in that the train didn't immediately tie down in Chrisman - instead, we got a little 'rare mileage' out to Dana, IN. Here, 101 set out a string of grain hoppers for the elevator, leaving it to return to Chrisman - where half of their train had been left behind - with just a handful of cars left. Poking out behind the shed to the left is CRGX 605, a strangely RF&P-looking ex-IC SD20, itself also a former UP SD24. Though not easily visible, it was a neat unit to spot to say the least. From here on, we'd be returning to Chrisman once again, this time with the former SD45s leading the charge instead.
Back on the Move Having made their single car setout and put the train back together, DREI 101 departs from Metcalf. It's a straight shot from here to Chrisman, where the train will terminate for the day. Metcalf is home to an interesting old square elevator, though it, like most local elevators, appears to be dormant. I wonder how long that'll stay standing?
A Tower For Every Town DREI 101 passes by the tall concrete elevator at Hume with its short train in tow. Hume's elevator is not to easy to shoot as it's flanked by homes and trees alike, but a little walk beside a field can get you near to the loading track and a better view of said elevator. Speeds here on the lower side as they approach nearby Metcalf to drop the lumber load there.
Crossing Back DREI 101s work en-route to Chrisman took it to Metcalf, where it would set out the lone lumber car up front on the Charleston Sub with a locomotive already waiting there, just to the south of town. The diamond in town here, formerly the B&O and the NKP, requires the conductor to basically request permission for the railroad to cross over itself. A fairly simple task, but there is quite a delay between hitting the button by the diamond and the signals actually lighting up to let them across. It's a neat little self-interchange, I'd say. With their one car set out, WAMX4134 crosses back over the Decatur sub to return to its train and continue the last leg of its morning journey.
