FORT OUIATENON

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN

This Vexes Me Just west of Otterbein, IN is a small grain elevator at Foresman, though it is no longer rail served as evidenced by the cut switch. This portion of the New York Central was dually operated - and I think even dually owned - by the NYC and the Nickel Plate Road. Not much remains as evidence towards either one, mostly just junk is strewn around. We're nearing the end of the eastbound run of the KBS for the day, though even then we won't be done quite yet. It's quite a leisurely chase, which is a nice change of pace!

FORT OUIATENON is an 18th-century French military outpost located in West Lafayette, Indiana. Founded in 1717, the fort was originally a trading post and was used as a staging area for French military campaigns against the British in the Ohio Valley. The fort was built on a sandbar along the Wabash River, and was surrounded by a wooden palisade. The fort had four bastions, which were connected by a wooden palisade. Inside the fort there were several buildings including a storehouse, a bakery, a blacksmith shop, and a hospital.

The fort was an important part of the French presence in the Midwest from 1717 until 1763, when it was abandoned by the French. After its abandonment, the fort was occupied by British and then American forces. The fort was finally abandoned in 1794.

Today, Fort Ouiatenon is a National Historic Landmark and is a popular tourist attraction. The site includes a replica of the original fort, as well as an interpretive center, a nature trail, and a museum. The museum includes artifacts from the fort, including weapons, tools, and pottery. Visitors can also explore the reconstructed palisade and learn about the history of the fort and its role in the French and Indian War.
