The Wayne County Historical Society, based in Fairfield, Illinois, exists to preserve, promote, and share the history of Wayne County. Established in 1962, the Society collects artifacts, photographs, documents, and oral histories from residents and former residents of the county, and uses these materials to bring Wayne County’s past to life.
The Society’s headquarters is located in the old Wayne County Jail, a building constructed in 1855. The building contains the Society’s research library, which holds a variety of resources for those researching local history, as well as the Society’s archives. The Society also operates a museum, located next to the jail, which houses a variety of artifacts and exhibits related to Wayne County’s history, including a large collection of pioneer artifacts.
The Society also offers educational programs and special events to promote public awareness and appreciation of Wayne County’s history. Past programs have included lectures and classes on various aspects of local history, as well as guided tours of historic sites and buildings throughout the county. The Society also produces a quarterly newsletter and publishes a variety of books, pamphlets, and articles related to local history.
