Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois is a public research university located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest. It was established in 1869 and is the oldest public university in the state. The university offers more than 200 degree programs in a wide range of academic disciplines and is one of only two law schools in the state.

The university is home to a thriving research program that includes a number of areas, such as the Department of Plant, Soil and Agricultural Systems, the Center for Sustainable Development, and the Energy Research and Development Center. The university also offers a variety of student-run organizations, such as the Southern Illinois Entrepreneurship Club, the Saluki Robotics Club and the Saluki Investment Club.

Southern Illinois University's campus is situated on more than 1,300 acres and includes more than 150 buildings. The main campus in Carbondale serves as the home of the university's main library, the Student Center, the Student Recreation Center and the SIU Arena.

In addition to offering an array of educational opportunities, Southern Illinois University also offers a variety of cultural, recreational and social activities. The university's athletic teams compete as members of the NCAA Division I and the Missouri Valley Conference. The university's mascot is the Saluki, which is an ancient Egyptian hunting dog.

Southern Illinois University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
