Second Choice Hayes old grain elevator makes for an interesting sight beside the CN 8952, the Grand Trunk heritage unit. This elevator hasn't been used in many decades, but still manages to stand proudly in the fields. It's a treat to still be able to shoot it. Originally, our plan with 8952 and E271 was to shoot it at Pesotum, however thanks to its work in Champaign, long shadows were eclipsing our shot. Not ideal, so we bailed on that and decided to go for Hayes. I toyed with various angles at the elevator, but finding something I was happy with was a struggle, though I've got ideas for future shots here for sure. The tight frame may not be the best for this spot, but I decided to give it a go anyway. Good learning experience here anyways.

Terminating the Terminal NS 1072 leads the 256 Roadrailer through Sadorus. To my surprise, the thing had slowed right on down. I had been expecting to have to really put my foot down to stay ahead for another shot or two, but then it wasn't really necessary. Turns out 32N was stopped just ahead of it, and CN had revoked NS control of the Tolono diamond just minutes after giving it to them. They just kept lining CN trains through the diamond for ages and got 256 and 32N stuck for quite some time. Got a chance for some long distance glamour shots though, so that was fun. Wacky day out!
Clinging to Life Chasing a train on the Lafayette District is no easy task since the roads and rails rarely parallel nicely - I always like to say it's because Pythagoras is a dick - but yet, I found myself doing it anyway. NS 255, one of two roadrailer trains left in the country, was led solo by the Monongahela heritage unit NS8025. Never an easy chase with a speedy train like the Triple Crown, but it was hard to say no. These roadrailers were meant to go away last summer, but yet they're still plugging along. I'm sure time is running out, but they continue to cling to life a little longer. Though codeline is by and large obsolete and no longer serving practical use, chunks of it remain along the tracks, such as here just outside of Bement near CP Wiggins. Trackside codeline has become something of an endangered species over the years as technology moves on and swaths are cleared out, so it's always nice to see some good looking poles still hanging on trackside.

Reaping the Rewards Harvest season is upon us now, though it was still a little ways out when I visited the DREI a few weeks ago. The fields have once again gone gold, signifying an incoming increase in rail traffic as they're harvested, which also means a hell of a lot more work for the employees on the DREI. I'm sure it's a "fun" time over there at this time of year. You know, Watcos scheme is a little on the controversial side - and for good reason, it's boring as hell and uninspired. Really most of these corporate schemes are, but I never see praise for Watco, which is fair. I'll give them one thing though, they at least picked a nice shade of yellow. It pairs nicely with the fields around this time of year. Especially if you only look at the front... Just east of Tuscola, Decatur & Eastern Illinois Railroads 101 job puts down some power after slow going through Tuscola. A healthy combo of being in the middle of town and the former owners of the line, CSX, having let the track condition diminish creates a bit of a rollercoaster of speeds in the area, and on the railroad as a whole. Slow through the UP/CN-IC/DREI diamond and town, fast east of town, and slowing once they reach the nearby town of Camargo - it's quite the adventure following 101 and its ups and downs!
