The Maricopa Live Steamers Railroad Heritage Preservation Society is a non-profit organization in Phoenix, Arizona dedicated to preserving, restoring, and operating historically significant railway equipment. The Society’s primary mission is to provide educational opportunities for children and adults about the history and operation of steam locomotives and related equipment.
The Society was founded in 1977 and has become one of the largest and oldest live steam organizations in the United States. The Society's members have a wide range of expertise and interests in all aspects of railway history. They have restored, maintained, and operated many original and recreated steam locomotives, freight and passenger cars, and other railway equipment both in Arizona and elsewhere in the United States, and even in Europe.
The Society operates a 1,000-foot long, 7.5-inch gauge, live steam railroad at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. The railroad features a variety of locomotives and cars, with a focus on historically accurate equipment from the Golden Age of steam railroading. The Society also has a signature full-size steam locomotive, the Phoenix, which is used for promotional and educational purposes.
The Society offers educational programs and events throughout the year, including the annual Arizona Steam Up, which is the largest live steam event in the Southwest. In addition, the Society hosts a number of youth-oriented activities, including summer camps and workshops.
The Society is open to anyone interested in learning about the history of steam locomotives and railway equipment, and is always looking for new members and volunteers.
