Getting Unstuck NS 255 had been stuck back at Dawn for several hours thanks to surprise maintenance of way. Our hopes of chasing beyond Decatur were quickly dashed, and our nice storm lighting had mostly dissipated. Still, we had a mission to shoot the RoadRailer, and we were gonna complete that mission. With maintenance out of the way, an eastbound manifest was finally able to move ahead, giving 255 time to roll to the Sloan-Rumple siding. They would meet here, then the 255 would finally get its long-awaited green signal and get moving west again. SD70ACe 1064 did the honours this day, a relatively unusual sight for the RoadRailers in their last days. We were able to nab him coming out of Sloan here - note the crank-down signals back there! - and even get a little hint of pacing in between here and Ivesdale before blasting off to Decatur itself. We didn't know we'd be waiting a while there too, but we still got what we wanted out of it. It all worked out in the end.

Yellow Harvest I don't get down to the DREI often enough. Consistent standard cabs in 2024 really isn't something to sneer at. Maybe I'll have to give it another go before years end. Last time I actually went in for a proper long photoshoot of this still relatively young shortline was a year ago when GP59 #5909 was brand new to the railroad. It and former SD45s 4236 and 4240 have the days 101 job well under control as they approach Garret. This little village doesn't have much going on, certainly no rail served industries, but a tall pile of gravel gave me a little height advantage I wouldn't usually have much any of out in central Illinois which was nice. I've come to feel like Watco's yellow and black isn't too bad when paired with the end of summer, as the crops start to golden up. Has a nice feel to it, even if the scheme is a bit bland. The random equipment strewn around in Garret aren't far off of a match with the yellow there, either you know... noticing a theme here. From here, the Atwood grain elevator can still be seen over the top of the train off in the distance, too.
Rumbling Through Rumple The trip to Deseret this summer started off the way any trip based out of central Illinois should: with a RoadRailer. Of course, nearly two months on, we can't get this again, but that just makes this trip all the more memorable. NS4814 is putting in the work on NS 255 as it leads its healthy string of trailers through Rumple. We had timed things rather well, as we came down here probably just fifteen minutes ahead of the train and pulled up to the crossing here to find the NS 256, the opposing RoadRailer, sitting there waiting for the 255, but juuust out of place for a good shot with both trains in it. Still, a telesmashed Triple Crown with some codeline is alright with me. Things were certainly going well on day one of the trip, but there certainly was a bittersweet undertone to our photos of the RoadRailer as less than two weeks later, this train would run for its last time. Still, in the moment, things were very good.
Shooting Stars IC1020 and IC1000 have CN A408 absolutely booking it through Mattoon past the old Illinois Central station. I was cutting it pretty close pulling up here as I'd made a stop just a few miles north for an extra shot, but I just barely made it! Lately, A408 has become more of a nocturnal train than ever and is hard to shoot unless you're on the south end of the CN Champaign sub. Still, I've gotten my fair share of shots of it and its counterpart with plenty of IC units leading the charge, so it is what it is.
Clearing Cadwell UP4014 has the "Heartland of America" train well underway as it races through Cadwell, IL. This little grain elevator community grew far larger than it probably ever has as spectators poured in on either side of the elevator and fields alike to witness the Big Boy at speed. This had been the only planned shot I had for the day, as I didn't expect to catch up with it again until its next scheduled stop - though I would wind up getting ahead anyway, happily. The Big Boy departed from Villa Grove extra late this day. Originally scheduled for mid-morning, the official schedule changed a few days beforehand to almost midday. Then a few more delays pushed it back just a little more. That wound up working out nicely, as it gave the sun time to swing around and light up the Cadwell elevator - plus the face of the steam engine itself! Handy thing, that.

Wisconsin not-so-Central CN3069, painted in some vaguely Wisconsin Central colours, powers CN U756 through South Tuscola. They dropped their extra CN motor back in Champaign and got a new, much friendlier crew on board. I'd planned to snap my photo at Hayes to the north and call it, but I wound up following along a little longer anyways. Tuscola's diamond presents speed restrictions that make catching up pretty easy, after all. Even though I'm not a fan of the way this unit got painted, it's something that isn't a standard CN GEVO or SD70M-2, so that's something. It's on the wrong 'Central' here, but you know.
Getting Another NS 259 rolled through recently with NS8101, the Central of Georgia heritage unit on the point. The timing was right... oh, why not go nab it? Clouds fought me the whole way with this train, and 2 of 4 photos I got were cloud-fucked, so that was less than fun. But, by Sadorus, I got some crisp lighting, so I was happy at the end of the day. 259 and counterpart 258 are the only stack trains that cross the Lafayette District in these parts, usually later in the day, so they're usually only caught at night for half the year or just not interesting enough to warrant seeking out. Still, crossing off heritage units on my photography docket is always a nice thing! Central of Georgia, a slightly odd name for a railroad, was lost to the Southern Railways conquest of railroads of the south in 1963. It still exists as a paper company today under Norfolk Southern after its 1971 reorganization despite the SOU-N&W merger in 1982.
