The Swedish-American Historical Society in Chicago, IL is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and culture of Swedish-Americans in the Midwest. Founded in 1932, the Society is the oldest Swedish-American organization in the United States and is one of the largest in the world, with a membership of over 1,500 individuals and institutions. The Society’s mission is to collect and preserve records and artifacts, promote research, and present programs and exhibitions related to Swedish-American heritage and culture.
The Society’s headquarters is located in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, which was once a center for Swedish immigrants. The Andersonville National Historic Site, located nearby, provides visitors with an introduction to Swedish-American culture in the Midwest. The Society’s library and archives contain over 50,000 volumes and manuscripts related to Swedish-American history and culture. The library also houses the Society’s research collections, which include family histories, genealogies, and other documents.
The Society’s annual events include the Swedish-American of the Year Award ceremony, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the Swedish-American community.
