The Vivian G. Harsh Society of Chicago, Illinois is an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to the advancement of African American and Black education, culture and history. Founded in 1971, the Society is the longest-running African American research library in the Midwest. It is the only library of its kind in Chicago dedicated solely to the history and culture of African Americans.

The Society's mission is to promote research and education in African American and Black culture, history, and literature. Its collections, programs, and services are designed and implemented to meet the needs of the African American and Black community. The Society's collections span from slavery to the present day, and include rare books, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials related to African American and Black history, culture, and literature.

The Society’s membership includes historians, librarians, educators, and members of the African American and Black communities who are committed to preserving and promoting African American and Black history and culture. In addition to its collections, the Society offers programs and services such as lectures and symposia, workshops and seminars, exhibits, and film screenings. It also provides a variety of services, including research assistance and access to its collections.
