HistoryMakers is an innovative non-profit organization located in Chicago, Illinois. The organization’s mission is to document, preserve and share the life stories of African American trailblazers. It was founded in 1999 by Julieanna Richardson, a civil rights activist and lawyer, to fill a gaping hole in the historical record of African American achievement.

HistoryMakers collects interviews with African Americans from all walks of life — from politicians and athletes, to artists and educators — and archives them for future generations. Through its website and exclusive events, HistoryMakers makes it possible for anyone to hear the stories of influential African Americans firsthand.

HistoryMakers also works to promote diversity in the media. Its “HistoryMakers in the Media” initiative strives to increase the visibility of African Americans in the media, and the organization has partnered with several major media outlets to ensure that African American stories are not overlooked.

In addition to its mission of preserving African American history and promoting diversity, HistoryMakers also provides educational resources to students and teachers. Its “HistoryMakers in the Classroom” program allows students to access the interviews in its archives, and the organization also offers scholarships to students pursuing degrees in African American studies.

HistoryMakers has helped to create a more inclusive historical record, and its work is vital to preserving the stories of African Americans who have made — and continue to make — history.
