The Eastland Disaster Historical Society in Arlington Heights, Illinois is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the 1915 Eastland Disaster. The Eastland was an excursion steamship that capsized in the Chicago River on July 24, 1915, resulting in the death of 844 passengers and crew. The Society was founded in 1995 by a group of volunteers who sought to honor the victims of the disaster, and to educate the public about the event and its importance in maritime history.
The Society's mission is to collect and preserve primary source documents, photographs, artifacts, and other memorabilia related to the disaster, and to make this information available to the public. The Society also seeks to create programs and materials that will help people learn about the event and its significance.
