Apple River Fort is a historic site located in Elizabeth, Illinois. It was built in 1832 by a group of settlers led by John Apple and James Johnson in response to the Black Hawk War. The fort served as a refuge for the settlers during the conflict between the Native Americans and the United States government.

The fort was originally constructed as a stockade with walls made of logs, which enclosed a two-story blockhouse. The blockhouse served as a storage area for supplies and ammunition, as well as a place for the settlers to sleep. The fort was designed to be easily defensible, with narrow windows and a door that could be barricaded in case of attack.

During the Black Hawk War, the fort was attacked by a group of Native Americans led by Black Hawk himself. The settlers were able to successfully defend the fort, and the attack was repelled. After the war, the fort continued to serve as a center of activity for the local community.

Today, Apple River Fort is a popular tourist destination and is open to the public for tours and events. The fort has been restored and features exhibits and displays that showcase the history of the Black Hawk War and the role that the fort played in it. Visitors can explore the fort and learn about the daily life of the settlers who lived there.
