The Illinois Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums is a non-profit organization founded in 1979 by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Its mission is to support the restoration, preservation and cultural programming of the Vatican Museums and its many priceless works of art. The organization is dedicated to educating the public about the unique cultural, historical and spiritual heritage of the Vatican Museums. It also supports the care and maintenance of the museums’ collections and their exhibitions in Chicago and other cities around the world.
The organization has been a major supporter of the Vatican Museums for over 40 years, and in that time it has funded a variety of projects. These include the restoration of rare Renaissance paintings, the conservation of ancient mosaics and the installation of interactive media displays. It has also provided financial and in-kind support to many of the Vatican Museums’ educational and cultural programming initiatives.
The Illinois Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums is supported by donations, grants and membership fees. Its members have included prominent figures such as Cardinal Francis George and former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. The organization’s annual gala is a major event for art lovers in the Chicago area, and its members have access to exclusive tours and events at the Vatican Museums.
