The Marshall County Historical Society in Lacon, IL was founded in 1969 by a group of local citizens to preserve and promote the history of Marshall County. The Society is located in the historic 1870 Courthouse in downtown Lacon, just a few blocks from the Illinois River. The Society collects, preserves and displays artifacts, documents, photographs and other materials related to the history of the county, which include farming, industry, government and education.
The Historical Society operates a museum which consists of a number of galleries that feature changing exhibits on a variety of topics. The museum also houses a library containing books, newspaper and magazine articles, photographs, genealogical records, and other materials. The Society has an active education program which includes lectures, guided tours, and programs specifically designed for school children.
The Society also organizes a variety of events throughout the year, including a popular community flea market and an annual dinner fundraiser. The Society works closely with other local organizations and institutions to promote the history and culture of Marshall County. The Society is a member of the Illinois State Historical Society, the Illinois State Museum Society, the Illinois State Genealogical Society, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
