Rock formation and moon set on Marcus Landslide Trail - McDowell Sonoran Preserve I got up early to hike Marcus Landslide Trail and catch a sunrise. But caught this moon set first by looking behind me at this interesting rock formation.

Get to know this 3.9-mile out-and-back trail near Scottsdale, Arizona. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 39 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, mountain biking, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are October through April. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
Marcus Landslide Trail is an interpretive trail with signs along the way describing the geological forces that led to a landslide about 500,000 years ago. This trail is fairly easy for the most part except for the final loop section which climbs up. There are many boulders and interesting rock formations along the way. The interpretive signs give information about the landslide, how it was believed to be caused, and the resulting landscape. The trail also gives nice views of the surrounding area, including Four Peaks, Mount McDowell, Weaver's Needle. The trail is well-maintained.

Four Peaks from Whiskey Bottle Trail - McDowell Sonoran Preserve These are the Four Peaks - Wekopa - east of Scottsdale.
I went out to the Fraesfield Trailhead to scout for sunrise locations. Leaving my house the sky was mostly clear so I figured this was going to be mostly hiking and not much photography so I left my tripod at home. As I hit Happy Valley Road and crossed over the mountains the clouds were rolling in over the Superstitions and the Salt River. Made me regret not bringing my tripod.
I found some spots on the Whiskey Bottle Trail for sunrises. I'm going to scout the Granite Mountain Trailhead. So far I still like the spot on the Marcus Landslide Trail.
I stopped at the Brown's Ranch Trailhead to scout for sunset spots. Some potential.

The trail starts at the Fraesfield Trailhead and heads northwest across the northeast side of Fraesfield Mountain and terminates at Powerline Road #2. From there, you can go back the way you came, or continue throughout the system of trails making a larger loop back to the Fraesfield Trailhead.

Phoenix Convention Center North and West Buildings, 3rd Street and Monroe Street, Phoenix, AZ Built in 2006-2009, these two Postmodern-style buildings were designed by Populous and Leo A. Daly to serve as an expansion and replacement of the old Phoenix Civic Plaza, built in 1972, and is known as the Phoenix Convention Center. The North Building sits on the site of the original convention center, which was demolished during the construction of the new buildings, and are characterized by their stone exterior, metal shade canopies, and angled glass bays between stone-clad piers. The buildings today are utilized for large events and conventions, and comprise the majority of the floor area of the Phoenix Convention Center.

Arizona Financial Theatre (Dodge Theatre), Washington Street and 4th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ Built in 2000-2002, this Postmodern-style building was designed by Dan Meis of NBBJ to serve as a concert hall and live performance theater for the city of Phoenix, and was originally known as the Dodge Theatre. The building features an angular facade clad in concrete and ribbed metal panels, with a curved facade that encloses the upper portion of the auditorium, and angled support columns that support the shade structure and glass facade at the main entrance. The building today is known as the Arizona Financial Theatre, and remains in use as a venue for sizable live performances, with a capacity of 5,000 people.

Phoenix Municipal Courthouse, Washington Street and 3rd Avenue, Phoenix, AZ Built in 1995-1999, this Postmodern-style building was designed by HOK, the Omni Group, and Daniel, Manning, Johnson and Mendenhall for the City of Phoenix to house the municipal courts. The building is clad in red stone and concrete panels with a semi-circular facade on the north side of the building, a flat facade with a large recessed semi-circular glass facade on the south side of the building, recessed window bays, a spire at the center of the parapet of the south facade, and a cylindrical pavilion at the base of the south facade, which is ringed by a metal canopy and houses the building’s main entrance lobby. The building is characteristic of the government buildings constructed in Downtown Phoenix during the late 20th Century.

J. W. Walker Building, Washington Street and 3rd Avenue, Phoenix, AZ Built in 1920, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Lee Fitzhugh to serve as a commercial building, and was acquired by Central Arizona Light and Power to house the company’s headquarters in 1926. The building is clad in terra cotta with fluted corinthian pilasters, large bays at the lower portion of the facade, casement windows on the second floor, a cornice with modillions and dentils, greek key motif reliefs at the spandrels, and a large open portico at the south end of the first floor of the building. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Today, the building houses the Arizona branch of the American Institute of Architects, as well as a sandwich shop.

Old Phoenix City Hall and Maricopa County Courthouse (County-City Administration Building), Washington Street and 2nd Avenue, Phoenix, AZ Built in 1928-1929, this Spanish Colonial Revival and Art Deco-style building was designed by Lescher and Mahoney and Edward Neild to serve as Phoenix City Hall and the Maricopa County Courthouse. The building replaced separate earlier courthouse and city hall buildings, built in the late 19th Century, which had been outgrown by the city and county governments. The building itself, however, was outgrown due to the rapid pace of the city’s development after World War II, with a new City Hall being built in 1963, and a new County Courthouse and County Administration Building in 1964, both of which stand on the blocks adjacent to the Old County-City Administration Building. The building has an H-shaped footprint and is built of reinforced concrete with a terra cotta exterior, a rusticated base, a red terra cotta tile hipped roof atop the tallest portion of the building, arched primary entrance bays on the Washington Street and 2nd Avenue facades, arched bays on the fourth floor, casement windows decorative Art Deco reliefs, decorative window trim, balconies at the second floor, and pendant-style light fixtures flanking the entrance bays. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Today, the building houses The Phoenix Police Museum, Maricopa County Justice Museum, and some Maricopa County Superior Court functions.
