OLD IDAHO STATE PENITENTIARY

BOISE, ID

Robinia pseudoacacia - black locust Black locust at Barber Park near the Boise River at the east end of East Boise Avenue, Boise, Ada County, Idaho. The non-dominance of the apical meristem renders the crooked tree growth habit of this species. This population could represent trees originally grown for ornamental purposes but this tree species does establish as an adventive.

The Old Idaho State Penitentiary, located in Boise, Idaho, is a historic prison that served as the primary correctional facility in the state from 1872 to 1973. The prison, originally known as the Territorial Prison, was built on 6.5 acres of land donated by the city of Boise. It was designed to house up to 200 inmates and was the first prison in the state.

The prison was built using stone, brick, and mortar, and was designed in the shape of a cross with four wings, a central courtyard, and a guard tower. Each wing of the prison was designed to house a specific type of inmate, such as those convicted of murder or those serving long sentences.

The prison was known for its harsh conditions; the cells were small, there were no windows, and the inmates were subject to the extreme weather of the region. The prison was also known for its harsh punishments; inmates were often subjected to solitary confinement and corporal punishment.

In 1973, the state of Idaho opened a new correctional facility, and the Old Idaho State Penitentiary was closed. Today, the prison is a museum and is open to the public for tours. Visitors can learn about the history of the prison and the people who were held there. The prison also serves as a popular venue for concerts and other special events.
