The Hula Preservation Society is a non-profit organization located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Founded in 1989, it is dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of hula, an ancient Hawaiian dance form. The Society works to protect hula as a living cultural tradition and to promote its practice in a manner respectful of its traditional cultural values.
The Society works to promote the practice of hula through educational programs and workshops, lectures, classes, and performance events. The Society's educational programs involve teaching the traditional hula kahiko, as well as modern hula auana. The Society also offers weekly classes and workshops, open to all ages, which involve the study of hula chants, costuming, and the traditional instruments used in hula.
The Society actively promotes hula performance events throughout the year. These include the Merrie Monarch Festival, the largest hula competition in the world, and other hula performances at festivals and special events. The Society also sponsors hula classes and workshops for both adults and children, and produces CDs and DVDs of hula.
The Society is committed to preserving hula as a living cultural tradition by encouraging its practice and teaching, and by promoting its performance events. The Society works to maintain a high level of professionalism and respect for the traditions of hula, and to ensure that hula is practiced in a manner that honors its cultural integrity.
