Rainbow on Maunakea - Hawaii (EPOD) Today my photo of the rainbow at the top of the Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii at an altitude of 4200m was selected as the Earth Science Picture of the Day (EPOD). <a href="https://epod.usra.edu/blog/2024/03/mauna-kea-summit-and-rainbow-fragment.html" rel="noreferrer nofollow">epod.usra.edu/blog/2024/03/mauna-kea-summit-and-rainbow-f...</a> <a href="https://noirlab.edu/public/images/iotw2341/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">noirlab.edu/public/images/iotw2341/</a> From the vantage point of Gemini North, one half of the International Gemini Observatory, operated by NSF’s NOIRLab, a small rainbow can be seen sprouting from behind smaller peaks near the summit of Maunakea. One of the five volcanoes constituting the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Maunakea rises to an elevation of 4205 meters (13,786 feet). At that elevation, tropical clouds infrequently cover the summit, but they often roll past at lower altitude, as seen here, bringing some moisture to the dry area. These water droplets suspended in the air would typically be invisible, but their presence is betrayed when light is refracted through them. The droplets become like prisms, slowing and then separating the almost white sunlight into its component colors. The result is a spectacular spectrum of light — a rainbow — that is beautifully complimented by the red soil of the volcano and deep blue of the sky. This photo was taken as part of the recent NOIRLab 2022 Photo Expedition to all the NOIRLab sites.

Alae Cemetery Driving north along the coast out of Hilo, Hawai’i, there is something that is certain to draw your attention. Clearly visible just to the east of the highway is the Alae Cemetery, dominated by this enormous ohai tree (Samanea saman). The tree arches majestically over a large area of graves, having a branching diameter of more than 50 meters (165 ft). My son and I paced it off! Samanea saman is a species of flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae, native to Central and South America. Ohai is the Hawaiian name for the tree, also known as saman, rain tree or monkeypod tree. Onomea Waterfalls Seen in the beautiful and lush Hawai‘i Tropical Bioreserve & Garden on Onomea Bay north of Hilo on the big island of Hawai’i. Dan Lutkenhouse Sr., founder of the Garden, discovered the Onomea Valley while on a vacation to the Big Island of Hawai’i in 1977. On his retirement from a California business, he and his wife purchased 17 acres just for its beauty and seclusion. But once he began exploring their new property he decided to preserve the valley forever and undertook the work of removing the overgrowth and the weeds and other invasive species. With no formal botanical training, using only hand tools to avoid disturbing the environment or destroying valuable plants and tree roots, Lutkenhouse and an assistant spent every single day at the work until the park opened in 1984. It took years of careful clearing of the jungle before he discovered one of the crown jewels of the Garden – Onomea Falls, a three-tiered waterfall said to be the most beautiful in all Hawaii. Even after the gardens opened, for the next 17 years, Lutkenhouse continued to cultivate, collect and plant over 2,500 tropical and subtropical plants, both native and species from around the globe. Over 100 of these species were personally procured on plant collecting trips to countries as far as Madagascar.
