Rainbow on Maunakea - Hawaii (EPOD) Today my photo of the rainbow at the top of the Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii at an altitude of 4200m was selected as the Earth Science Picture of the Day (EPOD).

From the vantage point of Gemini North, one half of the International Gemini Observatory, operated by NSF’s NOIRLab, a small rainbow can be seen sprouting from behind smaller peaks near the summit of Maunakea. One of the five volcanoes constituting the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Maunakea rises to an elevation of 4205 meters (13,786 feet). At that elevation, tropical clouds infrequently cover the summit, but they often roll past at lower altitude, as seen here, bringing some moisture to the dry area. These water droplets suspended in the air would typically be invisible, but their presence is betrayed when light is refracted through them. The droplets become like prisms, slowing and then separating the almost white sunlight into its component colors. The result is a spectacular spectrum of light — a rainbow — that is beautifully complimented by the red soil of the volcano and deep blue of the sky. This photo was taken as part of the recent NOIRLab 2022 Photo Expedition to all the NOIRLab sites.

The Camp Tarawa History Foundation, located in Kamuela, Hawaii, is dedicated to preserving the history of the U.S. Marine Corps base, Camp Tarawa, which was located on the island of Oahu from 1941 to 1968. The foundation was established in 2001 by a group of former Marines who served at Camp Tarawa and has become a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the memory of all Marines who served at the base.

The foundation collects and preserves artifacts, photographs, documents and other memorabilia from the era in which Camp Tarawa was active and organizes exhibits and other activities to educate the public about the base’s history. It also works to preserve the site of the former camp, which was turned into a housing development in the late 1960s, and to honor the service of the Marines who served there.

The foundation also holds an annual reunion for former Marines who served at the base and their families. This event includes a variety of activities, such as a memorial service, a parade, and a dinner. At the dinner, awards are presented to Marines who have served at Camp Tarawa and to those who have contributed to preserving the base’s history.

The foundation is also actively involved in the local community, regularly participating in parades and other civic events. It also offers scholarships to local students and provides educational programs to local schools. In addition, it works closely with the Hawaii State Department of Education to incorporate the history of Camp Tarawa into local curricula.
