Hui Malama O Koloa is a non-profit organization located in Koloa, Hawaii. The organization is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historic and cultural sites in the Koloa area. Sea turtle herpes, also known as Chelonid Herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5) I typically don't post sad photos but I thought I would share these. While diving I came across three green sea turtles with really bad looking tumors. Reading up on the disease that causes these tumors I learned that it is often a fatal form of herpes that infects six of the the seven species of turtles. Known as "Chelonid Herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5)" it can cause turtles to lose vision and impacts their ability to swim and eat. I was watching the turtle with the tumors on both sides of his face struggle to eat without bumping into rocks. I saw a turtle with similar tumors under his flippers on the Benwood wreck in Key Largo. Locally the Marathon Turtle Hospital does a great job operating on these turtles and eventually releasing several back into the sea.
