The Halawa Valley Land Trust (HVLT) is an organization based in the Hawaiian island of Molokai, in the small village of Kaunakakai. The organization is dedicated to protecting and preserving native Hawaiian cultural and environmental resources in the Halawa Valley, as well as promoting sustainable use and development of the valley.
The Halawa Valley is an area of great cultural, historical, and environmental importance. It is home to many ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites, and is an integral part of the ahupua’a (traditional Hawaiian land division) system. The valley is also the location of several sacred sites and ancient Hawaiian villages. In addition, it is home to a wide variety of native plant and animal species, including the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat, Hawaiian petrel, and Maui parrotbill.
The HVLT works to protect the Halawa Valley by acquiring land and water rights, developing land management plans, and providing education and outreach to the local community. The organization also works to promote sustainable use of the land, including projects to restore and protect native Hawaiian species, as well as providing educational and cultural programs to the public.
The HVLT is supported by a variety of donors and partners, including the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Dorrance Family Foundation, the Molokai Land Trust, and the Molokai Community Development Plan. It is committed to protecting the Halawa Valley for generations to come, and to preserving its cultural, historical, and environmental resources.
