Hawaii’s Plantation Village in Waipahu, HI is a living history museum that helps to preserve the cultural heritage of Hawaii’s sugar plantation era. Opened in 1989, the village includes over 25 historic buildings from various plantations around the Hawaiian Islands. Visitors are able to explore the grounds of this outdoor museum and learn about the history of the sugar industry in Hawaii.
The village features a variety of buildings, including a plantation store, a train station, an old plantation manager’s house, a blacksmith shop, a bathhouse, a replica of a plantation worker’s house, a large irrigation flume, and a large locomotive. There are also several reconstructed buildings such as a small Chinese store, a Japanese barbershop, and a Filipino store.
Visitors to the village can take a self-guided tour and explore the grounds at their own pace. There are also guided tours available that provide more in-depth information about the history of the village and the plantations. In addition to the historic buildings, there are also interactive exhibits, such as a working mill, a replica of an old plantation commissary, and a replica of an old plantation school.
