The Waimea Valley Audubon Center is located in the beautiful North Shore of Oahu in the town of Haleiwa. It is a sanctuary for native Hawaiian plants and wildlife, and is home to a wide variety of species. The Center is a 30 acre oasis surrounded by the lush Waimea Valley, with a large pond, streams, and a waterfall. The Center is host to numerous educational opportunities, including lectures, workshops, and field trips.

The Center has a variety of different habitats, including rainforest, dryland, and wetland habitats. It is home to numerous species of birds, including the endemic Oahu Elepaio, Red-footed Boobies, and various species of waterfowl. Other wildlife species found in the Center include the endangered Hawaiian Hoary Bat, the Hawaiian Monk Seal, and the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.

The Center also has a variety of hiking trails and educational programs, such as a guided tour of the grounds. The Center also has a large garden with over 200 species of native Hawaiian plants, which is open to the public. The garden also serves as a living laboratory where visitors can learn about the traditional and modern uses of native plants.

The Waimea Valley Audubon Center is a unique and important ecosystem, and it is an excellent place to observe some of Hawaii’s rare and endangered species. Young Laysan Albatross (4) First time seeing an Albatross in the wild. On Oahu, we visited Kaena Point trail with goals of Monk Seal and Albatross. We saw the seal but had to go all the way to the very end of the trail to find this young Laysan Albatross testing its wings.

2023 - HAL Noordam Cruise #2 - Sydney NSW to Vancouver BC - Honolulu, Hawaii - 38 of 47 After a 1 hour public transit bus ride we arrived at the Dole Plantation Visitor Centre. The Dole Plantation is one of the major tourist attractions in Oahu, Hawaii. The visitor centre is on the site of the original Dole Plantation and today is home to a gift shop/restaurant and activities like the Pineapple Express train, Garden Maze, and Plantation Gardens. Contrary to rumor, pineapples are not native to Hawaii and likely came from South America. However, it was James Dole who capitalized on the commercial opportunity that pineapples offered and Dole was responsible for the meteoric rise in popularity of the pineapple. Today, only a tiny fraction of the world’s pineapples come from Hawaii and those that do mainly serve local needs. The only thing with free access at the visitor centre is the gift shop. Some love the place, other like me think its an overrated tourist trap - been there done that.

Hawaiian Monk Seal (2) Is it the weekend yet? No. OK, I'm going back to sleep. Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal, Oahu, Hawaii. At one point there were only about 300 of these left. Currently they number close to 1000 so I was happy to find 2 separate seals on our trip.

Waiawa Pearl Highlands Station The only station with up and down escalators. I guess with the expectation of having a 1200 space parking garage, they needed two sets of escalators. Alas the garage was never built.
