It is roughly two miles east of the port city of Savannah that it was meant to protect. Fort Jackson strategically played second-fiddle to the more technologically advanced Fort Pulaski, which was a few more miles east at the mouth of the Savannah River.
Fort Pulaski fell to the United States early in the Civil War thanks to a blindsided Confederate military command.
