The Society was founded in 1976 by a group of citizens who wanted to document, preserve, and share the history and culture of their region. The Society focuses its efforts on the area known as Cochise County, which is located in the southeastern corner of Arizona. The area is home to a wide variety of Native American tribes, including the Chiricahua Apache and the Tohono O’odham, as well as settlers from many different cultures who moved to the area in the late 19th century.

The Society's main office is located in Douglas, Arizona, and its activities include archaeological field trips and research, educational programs, cultural and historical presentations, and a variety of community events. The Society's museum, located in the historic Cochise County Courthouse in Douglas, displays artifacts, photographs, and documents related to the area's past, and provides a repository for Cochise County's historic records. The Society also operates the historic Fort Bowie National Historic Site and the Chiricahua National Monument. Additionally, the Society hosts an annual History Conference, which focuses on the history and culture of the area.
