The Walker County Historical Society in LaFayette, Georgia is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the county. Founded in 1982, the Society has grown from a small group of local historians to an organization of more than 400 members from around the world.
The Society operates the historic Dixie-Walker House in LaFayette. Built in 1867, the house serves as the Society’s headquarters and is open to the public for tours and special events. The Society also manages the Walker County Historical Park, which includes a restored log cabin and a replica of Poplar Springs Church, one of the oldest churches in the county.
The Society’s mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Walker County and its people. The Society sponsors a variety of educational and cultural activities, including lectures, symposia, workshops, and school programs. The Society also maintains a library and archives that are open to the public with a wide variety of resources for research.
The Society also publishes a quarterly newsletter and an annual journal of local history. In addition, the Society collects and preserves artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, and other records of historical value. The Society’s gift shop sells books, postcards, and other items related to the history of Walker County.
