The Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site in Cartersville, Georgia, is an ancient complex of Native American earthworks constructed by the indigenous people of the Etowah Valley of Northwest Georgia. The site covers over 53 acres, including six earthen mounds, a plaza, and a defensive ditch.

The site is believed to have been occupied from 1000 CE to 1550 CE by the prehistoric Mississippian culture, which is also known as the Moundbuilders. The largest mounds at the site are believed to have been constructed between 1000 and 1250 CE. The largest of these is the Great Temple Mound, which is believed to have been used for religious ceremonies and political gatherings. This mound stands over 55 feet tall and is one of the largest in the Southeast United States.

The other mounds at the site include two burial mounds and three platform mounds. The burial mounds contain the remains of Native American dignitaries and are believed to have been constructed between 1000 and 1250 CE. The platform mounds are believed to have been constructed between 1250 and 1550 CE and were used for residences and other public structures.

The site also includes a defensive ditch, which was constructed between 1000 and 1250 CE. This ditch is approximately 600 feet long and was likely used to protect the site from invaders.

The Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site is a significant archaeological site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is open to the public for tours and educational programs.
