▶ "Kalmia latifolia — known as mountain laurel, calico-bush, or spoonwood— is a species of flowering evergreen shrub in the heath/heather family, Ericaceae. Native to the eastern United States, from southern Maine south to northern Florida, Kalmia latifolia is naturally found on rocky slopes and mountainous forest areas, growing in large thickets. It grows 10 to 30 feet tall (3–9 m). its flowers are hexagonal, sometimes appearing to be pentagonal, ranging from light pink to white, blooming in May and June. Despite the name 'mountain laurel,' Kalmia latifolia is not closely related to the true laurels of the family Lauraceae. All parts of the plant are poisonous."

▶ The Laurel Creek Trail —the least hiked trail of the Davidson-Arabia Nature Preserve— is also one of its prettiest. Mountain laurel evokes images of fast-flowing creeks and craggy peaks, and this hike lives up to that image. After the route crests, it follows a quiet, forested ridge to meet up with a bubbling creek with two [small] cascades, mountain laurel, and the feeling of exploring a forgotten hollow in the Appalachian Mountains. Then, just like that, you're back on a paved path next to an elementary school. It's like magic."
