BROWN HOUSE MUSEUM

SANDERSVILLE, GA

Great Shearwater. GMNH 5667. Washington County, 14 July 1997. Photo by Lynn Schlup Unlike Georgia's other known shearwater spp., the Great Shearwater is known to experience widespread, massive "die-offs" in mid-summer that appear to be cyclic in nature, though all of the contributing factors are still not fully understood. This individual showing up in a dying condition so far inland -- in the complete absence of any tropical storm system -- may be attributed to this natural phenomenon, although it is an extraordinary record nonetheless.
