The Casa Malpais Restoration Project in Springerville, Arizona is a historic preservation effort dedicated to restoring the ruins of the ancestral home of the White Mountain Apache Tribe. The ancestral home was built by the tribe over 800 years ago and is located on a prehistoric site near the headwaters of the Little Colorado River. Just beyond the trailhead The West Baldy Trail #94 in Arizona's Apache National Forest follows the West Fork of the Little Colorado River up to an 11,200-foot-high ridge, with the endpoint of the trail about 0.8 mile north of the highest point in the White Mountains -- Mount Baldy at 11,421 feet. The summit is sacred to the White Mountain Apaches and is <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/asnf/about-forest/?cid=FSEPRD667233" rel="noreferrer nofollow">closed to those who are not members of the tribe</a>. Up and back on this trail is about 14.5 miles, with a 2200-foot accumulated elevation gain. (My Garmin showed the trailhead at 9,273 feet and the endpoint at 11,171 feet, plus or minus 30 feet.)
