The Butterfly Lodge Museum in Greer, Arizona is a unique and fascinating museum located in the heart of the White Mountains. This museum, which was built in the late 1800s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is filled with artifacts, memorabilia, and exhibits that tell the story of the Apache, Navajo, and White Mountain Apache nations who inhabited the area.

The museum showcases the traditional lifestyle of these Native American tribes, along with their history, culture, and spiritual beliefs. There are displays of artifacts such as pottery, jewelry, weapons, tools, and clothing from the various tribes, as well as photographs and paintings depicting their lives.

In addition to the museum displays, visitors can also explore the grounds, which include the Butterfly Lodge, a traditional Apache dwelling, and a variety of outdoor exhibits. These include a sweat lodge, a medicine wheel, and a traditional Apache dance circle.

South facing The south-facing slopes of the West Fork's valley are dry and surprisingly warm. Across the river, at left here, conditions are entirely different. In Arizona, sun exposure is everything.
Just beyond the trailhead The West Baldy Trail #94 in Arizona's Apache National Forest follows the West Fork of the Little Colorado River up to an 11,200-foot-high ridge, with the endpoint of the trail about 0.8 mile north of the highest point in the White Mountains -- Mount Baldy at 11,421 feet. The summit is sacred to the White Mountain Apaches and is <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/asnf/about-forest/?cid=FSEPRD667233" rel="noreferrer nofollow">closed to those who are not members of the tribe</a>. Up and back on this trail is about 14.5 miles, with a 2200-foot accumulated elevation gain. (My Garmin showed the trailhead at 9,273 feet and the endpoint at 11,171 feet, plus or minus 30 feet.) Ed at trail's end At this point, at about 11,200 feet on the border between the Apache National Forest and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, you can turn and go back down the way you came (which is what we did), or go back down an alternate route, the East Baldy Trail.
Meadow The valley of West Fork of the Little Colorado River is wide enough in places to feature stream meanders and broad meadows.
